User Manual Design
Overview
This project established a standardized visual and instructional system for user manuals across the product line. Dense, text-heavy documentation was transformed into clear, step-by-step guides supported by intuitive layouts and hand-drawn illustrations. Starting with a complex infant car seat manual, this user-centered methodology became the foundation for all subsequent product launches and refreshes.
My role
I led the end-to-end redesign of the manuals, beginning by assembling each product myself to fully understand the user experience. From there, I developed intuitive instructional flows, identified and emphasized key features, and created simplified, hand-drawn illustrations to translate complex information into clear, accessible guidance. This framework ensured clarity, consistency, and brand alignment across the entire product line.

Understand
As someone who has assembled a fair share of flat-pack furniture, I understand the impact a clear, well-designed user manual can have. The starting point for these manuals, was dense, legally required text, particularly for the infant car seat, where every installation method and seat belt configuration had to be documented. The content was entirely text-based and written without considering the mindset of overwhelmed new parents.

Design process
To ground the process in real user experience, I started by assembling each product myself and mapped the most logical instructional sequence. Reference photography ensured accuracy and informed the development of simplified, stylized illustrations that clarified each step.

To transform the experience, I restructured the manual with clarity and usability as the primary goals:
- Created a clear hierarchy of information with an intuitive table of contents
- Designed sidebar indicators and footer navigation for context and way-finding
- Developed overview pages to highlight essential features before diving into detailed instructions
- Prioritized and presented the recommended installation method first
- Organized alternative installation methods in a clear, highly visual format
The result was a manual that balanced legal requirements with user-centered design, helping parents quickly find the information most relevant to them.

Applying design direction to future product releases
This same methodology of understanding the user’s mindset, building clear hierarchy, simplifying visuals, and reinforcing brand consistency was applied across new product launches and product refreshes.
